Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas views Lyon tie as litmus test

The north London outfit are going strong guns in the Premier League and lie fourth, just a point behind third placed Chelsea.

But Lyon, who made the semi-finals of Europe's elite competition four years ago represents a stern test for Villas-Boas.

He is fully aware of the challenge that awaits believe him, and believes the result could have a say on whether Spurs are able to compete with the cream of Europe again.

He said: "I think we've been handed the most difficult draw of this knock-out phase.

"This is like a Champions League tie, Lyon represent a club with tremendous Champions League experience in recent years.

"It will be a good test for Tottenham. It's always going to be a learning experience for us and I think it can serve that purpose towards the future, that's for sure."

As far as team news goes, Younes Kaboul is still out but could be available for selection in two weeks' time.

Jermain Defoe is ruled out with an ankle injury and Tom Huddlestone has a minor knee injury.

Brad Friedel will start in goal, denying Hugo Lloris the chance to face his former employers.

Spurs qualified as runners-up from Group J.
