Wind kicks up 100-year-old volcanic ash in Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? A smog-like haze that hung over part of Alaska's Kodiak Island this week was courtesy of a volcanic eruption ? 100 years ago.

The National Weather Service said strong winds and a lack of snow on Tuesday helped stir up ash from the 1912 eruption of Novarupta, the largest volcanic blast of the 20th century.

This week, ash from the volcano drifted up to about 4,000 feet. It traveled over the Shelikof Strait and across Kodiak Island, prompting an aviation alert. The news was first reported by KMXT radio.

Weather service meteorologist Brian Hagenbuch said it isn't unheard of for ash from Novarupta to create a haze, but it isn't very common either. Winds in the area were blowing about 35 to 40 mph, with gusts of more than 52 mph.

Officials first picked up the haze on a weather camera one morning when the sun was rising. "It looked very foggy. ... It was kind of a curious thing," Hagenbuch said. "We didn't expect fog there."

As the day got lighter, the haze took on a "brownish, smog-type look," he said.

A satellite image showed a "milky white plume" spreading out from the northern Alaska peninsula, and authorities later confirmed the existence of ash particles, he said.

At Larsen Bay, a community of about 90 people on Kodiak Island's northwest coast, a thick haze lingered until late Tuesday afternoon, said Charlene Clampffer, the town's secretary.

"It was over everything," Clampffer said.

"It looked like it was going to rain or something when we first noticed it," she said. Then, people realized: "That's not clouds! That's ash from a volcano somewhere."

The ash wasn't alarming, as residents of Larsen Bay, about 280 miles southwest of Anchorage, have experienced haze from volcanoes before.

This time, ash dusted streets, boardwalks and cars.

"We had to wear masks and take care of ourselves," Clampffer said.

When Novarupta erupted in June 1912, it spit ash as high as 100,000 feet above the sparsely populated Katmai region, covering the remote area now known as the Valley of 10,000 Smokes to depths of up to 700 feet. The volcanic cloud spread across the U.S. and traveled as far as Algeria in northern Africa in what also was one of the five largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history ? 10 times more powerful than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington.

Dave Schneider, a geophysicist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, said it's no surprise a lot of ash remains at Novarupta. He said it will be that way for "many, many more years."

A6CmxDLCUAE1VFY1Some say Tel Aviv is almost like having Silicon Valley on Europe's doorstep, and you do get that feeling sometimes. The urgency of the people and their sheer energy is infectious. It's not for nothing that VCs take regular flights there and multinational tech companies like Microsoft establish accelerators. And the local scene throws up a tonne of initiatives. One of the best is Techono.me. Organised by Orli Yakuel and Edward Resnick, Techono.me 2009, 2010, 2011 were all supported by TechCrunch, and we're doing that again because it's a great platform for Israeli companies to announce their new products. Put it this way, in 2009 Face.com emerged from the event, and was this year bought by Facebook for around $60 million. So let's get into the companies that launched. Sirius Satellite Comes to Udvar-Hazy | Around The Mall

The satellite (shown in its display at Udvar-Hazy) was a backup for an innovate three-satellite system for Sirius satellite radio. Photo by Dane Penland

No, Udvar-Hazy did not spring for a subscription to satellite radio and start listening to the all-Bruce Springsteen all-the-time station. It did, however, acquire a piece of communications history with the addition of a Sirius FM-4 broadcasting satellite.

That the technology, first conceptualized in the 1980s and launched in 2000, is now a piece of history just indicates how rapidly the industry is evolving as satellite technology becomes a greater part of every day life each year.

Satellite technologies only became a private enterprise a few decades ago. ?One doesn?t even begin to think about the potential and beneficial use of communications satellites until the 1960s,? explains space history curator Martin Collins. NASA led the development with government programs but with the wave of privatization that peaked in the 70s and 80s, the industry went commercial. Largely used for broadcast television, satellite systems relied on what is called ?geostationary orbit,? meaning the satellite orbited around the equator. Unfortunately for individuals dwelling in places distant from the equator, the signal could only reach so far.

At the time of its development, the SiriusXM satellite presented an innovative way to reach those consumers who had not been reached before by traditional satellite broadcasters. Using three satellites with a ?highly inclined elliptical orbit,? SiriusXM was able to bring satellite radio to a greater geographic area. An ingenious solution, the strategy required more elaborate technologies. ?When you use highly elliptical orbits,? says Collins, ?you have to use more sophisticated approaches to tracking the satellite, to communicating with the satellite, to adjusting its orbit, to maintaining high performance, so you have these additional complicating factors.?

A team installs the new acquisition early Tuesday October 16. Photo by Dane Penland

Over time, the industry caught up and can now produce single satellites that are capable of reaching distant consumers even while utilizing a geostationary orbit. ?The new generation of their satellites are bigger, have more power, and use larger antennas to transmit their signals,? Collins explains.

There is one pretty large exception when it comes to phasing out highly elliptical orbits: Russia. The country began using the technology when it was still part of the Soviet Union and continues to use it because so much of its land mass is at high latitudes.

Developed under Robert Briskman, SiriusXM?s advances are part of what Collins says is an incredible shift away from ground-based communications. One of the greatest hallmarks of the early age of radio, begun more than 100 years ago, are the skeletal towers that transmit radio waves across the Earth?s surface. ?One of our material cultural aspects of the 20th century is seeing these very tall towers around communities, whether it?s to broadcast television or radio,? says Collins. ?With the Space Age, one in essence has the ability to elevate those towers above Earth and broadcast down and thus reach much greater geographic areas than one could do previously.?

Not only does the Sirius FM-4 satellite, which was built by Space Sytems/Loral for Sirius as a backup for the three-satellite system, represent a breakthrough in commercialized Space Age communications, it signals a broader shift that has remade our built environments and our daily experience.

?I?think this move that sort of happened in the 80s and 90s to provide directly to individuals these kinds of satellite services, whether it was television or, in the case of Sirius, digital radio in your automobile or your home, were major, major transformations,? Collins says. Though he cites our rapacious appetite for entertainment, he says there are other notable integrations of the Space Age into daily life, from GPS in our cars to the very infrastructure of the business community.

Learn A Back Massage Technique & Soothe the Pain Youself

Oct 23, 2012 by mindywender

As our lives are getting busier and over stressed, a number of physical and mental ailments have surfaced in the recent era. Relieving the stress with the help of relaxation techniques is one of the old-book methods, practiced in the present times as well.

Massage therapies have always stood out as the best relaxation techniques to sooth the muscle tension. When you think massage method, a back massage is the most commonly used form as back is the epicenter of stress.

Although a professional masseur can take away the back ache with the help of a sensuous back rub, but simply a home-made massage could be just what you need. Learn about some back massage techniques to ease out the chronic muscle back ache or simply to reduce stress.

Back Massage Techniques to Reduce Back Ache:

As our back comprises of intimate collection of muscles, nerves and spinal cord, the back ache develops even with the slightest negligence. Back rub helps to relax the stiffening of the muscles and a masseur can even cure an injury with effective back massage methods.

Commonly back massage techniques rely on the following:

  • Percussion,
  • Rubbing,
  • Kneading,
  • Pulling to loosen muscles,
  • Direct pressure to flush blood flow,
  • Friction for warming the tissues

Getting A Back Massage For Problem Areas:

Whole Hand Effleurage:

This is a back massage technique, which requires the use of palm of both hands. Start at the lower back. Move your hand slowly upwards with circular motions gently done around the entire back for up to 10 minutes.

Deeper Penetration With Effleurage:

An alternate technique is to use deeper penetration with the heel of the hands. This is a form of deep tissue massage technique. The motions will be circular, outwards, and in upward position. Return from neck towards the centre of the back.

Forearm Back Massage Methods:

Usually masseur adopts this technique for deeper penetration. Place the forearms perpendicular to the body. The pressure applied will be downward with left forearm onto the lower back, and right arm will be moved parallel direction over the entire back.

Acupressure Back Massage:

Acupressure Back Massage techniques are centuries old. It is done by sitting on a flat surface. With back rub using all fingers, massage back and forth on the back to circulate energy. Start by using pressure points at different parts of the back, starting at lower back, on either side of spine and move up another inch directly above the pressure point.

Massaging with the Thumb:

A back massage can also be given by using the thumb pressure right around the spinal cord and moving in an vertical direction. Press the pads of the thumb into lower back and press all the way up to the neck in one swift motion. Move half way from lower back to the center and repeat the overall action.

Fingertip Effleurage:

To work on small areas of stress, fingertip effleurage is used. By putting one hand on the top of the other, downward force is applied by fingers, starting at the spine. Push out the pressure on the sides with swift motions. Do this all the way up and then switch sides.

The Results of Back Rub and Back Massage Techniques:

If your back is constantly under back ache, try a back massage technique to gently warm and loosen the tight muscles, leading to effective pain relief. These kinds of poking and pushing will help the tension to lower and with the increase of right pressure the blood flow will increase, providing you back ache relief.

Army opens Manpack and Rifleman Radio competitions | Defense ...

Army leaders announced Monday they will open the Rifleman and Manpack Radio competitions Monday with the defense industry eager to tackle a contract that could yield a multi-billion dollar purse as the Army looks to reinvigorate their aging communications architecture.

The Army has listed its Network and communications systems as the service?s top modernization priority. The Pentagon canceled the Joint Tactical Radio System. Army officials, however, look to salvage the Rifleman and Manpack Radio systems that fell under JTRS.

General Dynamics has received an order from the Army for 3,726 Manpacks. Army officials have ordered another 19,327 Rifleman Radios splitting the order between General Dynamics and Thales.

Despite the orders, the Army chose to open the competition to bidders. Army leaders said on the floor at the Association of the U.S. Army that they have not lost faith in either General Dynamics or Thales to build the radios, but its in the best interests of the Army to review as many offers as possible.

Heidi Shyu, the Army?s acquisition chief, has made clear her desire to instill as much competition as possible in order to save money.

The Manpacks have also already run into problems in testing at the White Sands Missile Range where the Army holds the Network Integration Evaluation. Independent Pentagon testers found the Manpacks didn?t hold up in simulated combat conditions. General Dynamics contends the conditions were too extreme with the multitude of radios in the desert causing problems with all radios in the area.

A host of companies are expected to bid to build the two radio systems to include BAE Systems, Harris as well as General Dynamic and Thales. With so few defense contracts up for bid, this one will draw a considerable amount of attention.

Canadians could free themselves from oil imports, but will they?

Despite being the world's ninth largest exporter of crude oil and petroleum products, Canada is a longtime oil importer, Cobb writes. That could change.

You are not alone if you think it's odd that Canada--the world's ninth largest exporter of crude oil and petroleum products and the main supplier of oil imports to the United States--is itself a longtime oil?importer,?importing more than 40 percent of its oil needs this year.

The situation results from historical pipeline development which has left Canada without a major east-west pipeline to bring the huge surplus of oil produced in the western provinces--now primarily from tar sands--to the eastern part of the country. The country's provinces from Ontario eastward currently import a little more than 60 percent of their oil needs from overseas. That may be set to change.

Winston Churchill once said, "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing--after they've tried everything else." It seems he could have been talking about the Canadians and their oil predicament. Earlier this year TransCanada, a major pipeline company, proposed expanding the current pipeline system known asKeystone?to carry more western Canadian crude to America's Gulf Coast. But, the pipeline giant was?rebuffed by the Obama Administration?in an election-year gambit to satisfy environmentalists concerned about the impact of tar sands development on climate change and water quality. Enbridge, another Canadian pipeline company, has proposed the so-called?Northern Gateway pipeline?route from the tar sands to the British Columbia coast. From there the oil would be exported to satisfy growing Asian demand.?But practically everyone along the Northern Gateway route has lined up against it including the British Columbian premier.

Now, yet another route is being considered, one that would allow TransCanada to live up to its name.?The company's latest proposal?would take an east-west natural gas pipeline which is now being underused and convert it into an oil pipeline to bring western Canadian crude to currently import-dependent eastern Canada. The plan, which will require regulatory approval, may not face the stiff opposition that the other two projects faced since this pipeline is largely complete. It would require only some additional work to convert it and link it to refineries and storage depots.

The result would be a flow of up to 1 million barrels per day of oil to eastern Canada, more than enough to displace all of Canada's current imports and possibly allow for exports of crude oil from the eastern seaboard. Canadians would still be subject to world oil prices since oil would remain a global commodity that can be shipped to the highest bidder. But, the country would no longer be vulnerable to supply disruptions from abroad and would be in a position to prevent exports if a national emergency warranted it.

With this change Canada would move closer to true energy independence.?It currently exports electricity to the United States and imports only a tiny amount of U.S. electricity due to historical infrastructure or regional rate differentials. Canada is the world's second largest producer of uranium,?providing 17 percent of global supply in 2011.?Therefore, the country does not need to import any for use in its own nuclear power plants. In 2011 Canada was the world's?14th largest producer of coal?and?exported about 30 percent of its production. Some imports were recorded. The long border with the United States, a major coal producer, sometimes makes U.S. imports more economical depending on the type of coal and the shipping distances. When it comes to natural gas, however,?Canada's National Energy Board reports that while the country produces 70 percent more than it needs, it still imports the equivalent of 31 percent of its consumption--even as it exports the equivalent of 100 percent of Canadian consumption to the United States.?As with oil, historical pipeline infrastructure dictates this unusual arrangement. But that is a story for a future piece.

The oil industry has been working on a way to get growing volumes of oil out of western Canada cheaply for some time. And, the cheapest way is via pipeline. Producers have been suffering steep discounts to world prices with?Western Canadian Select crude oil futures trading in New York at a discount of about $20 per barrelcompared to American Light Sweet Crude which itself has been trading at approximately a $20 discount to Brent Crude in Europe. So, the total discount to prevailing world prices for western Canadian crude is currently around $40. It's easy to see why the industry is anxious for a pipeline that will allow it take advantage of higher world prices.

With opposition running strong against the two alternatives, the oil industry may be forced to consider the TransCanada pipeline conversion proposal to ship oil to eastern Canada, a proposal that happens to coincide with Canada's national interest. But don't expect to hear industry executives whistling "O Canada" at their desks just yet. It's not clear how much support the project will find among those executives.

That support will be critical because the current Canadian government, which must approve the project, has shown itself congenitally incapable of distinguishing between the national interest and the interests of international oil companies. Therefore, the government isn't likely to force the project on the industry even if the pipeline would be a good idea for Canada as a whole. However, if the oil industry ends up embracing the project, the Canadian government will almost certainly rubber-stamp it. And thus, the government and the industry may inadvertently end up doing what has for a very long time been within Canada's grasp and in its best interest, namely, to free the country from imported oil.

Kuwait ruler orders electoral system changes

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Kuwait's emir said on Friday he had ordered partial changes to the Gulf Arab state's electoral system to fix deficiencies ahead of expected elections, prompting opposition threats to boycott the vote.

Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah dissolved parliament last week to pave the way for new election which many hoped would end a persistent political turmoil that had held up development projects in the major oil producer and U.S. ally.

The opposition, which won a parliamentary majority in a February poll, had said it feared authorities would try to push through new voting rules that could help pro-government candidates.

"I have directed the government to issue a draft law to make partial amendments to the electoral system, aimed at improving the voting mechanism to preserve national unity and to strengthen the practice of democracy," the ruler said in a speech aired on state television.

Kuwait's constitutional court had issued a ruling that allowed for any necessary changes to be made to the country's electoral system, he said. He did not elaborate on what the proposed changes should be.

Kuwaiti opposition politicians criticized the decision and said calls for boycotting the elections were growing.

"We have announced our position that if there was any meddling, there will be a boycott of the election, and what happened was meddling with the constitution of Kuwait," Hamad al-Matar, a former member of parliament, told Reuters after an opposition meeting.

"I believe there will be big reaction," he added.

Faisal al-Mislem, another former MP, said: "There is no need for issuing any decree and we refuse to participate in the elections."

Dhari Al-Rujaib, a youth activist, said there were calls being issued for protests against the emir's decision. "The street is not happy with the decision," he said.

Kuwait oil wealth and a generous welfare state have helped it avoid the "Arab Spring" protests that forced out leaders elsewhere in the region.

But there have been regular demonstrations in the country since last year, stemming from a struggle between the government dominated by the ruling family and mainly Islamist and tribal lawmakers in parliament.

Tensions increased as Kuwaitis waited for the emir to fix a date for the election, which must be held within 60 days from the date of parliament's dissolution.

Kuwaiti authorities arrested two opposition politicians on Thursday and interrogated a third after they made comments seen as criticizing the emir.

The former members of parliament spoke at an opposition-led rally of about 5,000 people on Monday where Kuwaitis later clashed with riot police close to parliament.

The arrests have prompted protests in Kuwait, including one late on Friday, where some 1,000 people had gathered in the center of the capital to demand the release of the detainees.

The events prompted the Al-Sabah family to issue a rare statement on Thursday calling for obedience to the emir.

The Al-Sabah dynasty has ruled Kuwait for more than 250 years. The 83-year-old emir has led the country since 2006.

Although Kuwait allows more freedom of speech than some of its fellow Gulf states, the emir is seen as untouchable and is referred to as "immune and inviolable" in the constitution.

Sheikh Sabah also warned in his speech On Friday that the recent political turmoil in Kuwait could lead to "strife that could be about to erupt and destroy our unity, disfigure our identity and tear apart our society into fragmented groups".

He said he had instructed the government to establish a national electoral committee and to organize election campaigns "to guarantee the integrity of the electoral process."

Speech, tantrums, parents and stress... I'm not coping. Please help ...

I'm usually a strong and independent woman. I've dealt with abusive relationships, friends' suicide attempts, my sister having no contact with my family for over a year, an unplanned pregnancy, my fiancee dumping me, and working 40+ hours a week while pregnant to start saving a house deposit so I can build a future for myself and my son. Three years on and I'm starting to crack. I'm not one for asking for help, but I'm starting to realize that I cannot keep going without someone to talk to and since the only two friends I have that have kids are married/engaged, I feel like nobody else understands my situation.

Legally, I'm a single mother, though I have a wonderful and supportive boyfriend. We've been dating for 15/16 months now, have talked about getting engaged and marrying after I finish Uni, and we want to plan a life together. He loves my son to bits and seems to be the only one supporting me at the moment. I'm at Uni full-time, but Uni has finished for the year. I work part-time and am trying to get more hours because my car died last week, and I don't have the savings for a new one so I'm currently without transport. Thankfully work is an easy 30min bus ride and childcare is a 10 min walk away.

Because I'm a Uni student I can't afford to move out of home, and my parents said they'd happily have me home until I graduate and buy a house, but I'm starting to struggle. My dad once told me after an argument that if I didn't want to be here then I should think about finding somewhere else to live. My mother is starting to tell me how to parent my son and has even gone as far as to tell me I'm wrong. Call me naive about being a first time mom, but I've taken what my parents did and picked what I liked and discarded what I don't like. I will choose how I parent my son and I do not appreciate being told I'm wrong when I believe I'm doing what's best for him.

My son is in desperate need of speech therapy. His pronunciation is shocking and although he's been on the waiting list for 6 months apparently he needs to wait until May/June next year. I sometimes struggle to understand him under calm circumstances but in the past couple of months my son has been throwing really bad tantrums. In a good mood he will just drop to his knees and sulk. In a bad mood, as soon as he doesn't get his way or something he wants, he will start screaming and hitting things and throwing things. He has never been physical with me, the worst is screaming and hitting objects/furniture. But the tantrums are getting worse. We have to asses if he's in a good mood before we can go shopping/to dinner/to friends' houses.

I've had issues with anger problems in the past, especially when I was in the abusive relationship and defended myself by attacking back. I want to state first that I've never abused my son. I've smacked the back of his hand or his bum (which is protected by nappy) and sometimes I have to physically lift him and move him if he's throwing a tantrum, but I've never thrown him or beaten him. But the tantrums over the past few months have ended up with me screaming at him in the middle of the night because he won't tell me what's wrong and he won't speak. I've wanted to leave him scream all night and turn off the monitor. I've wanted to shake him to shut him up. I've wanted to punch the wall to get my frustration out. I've had to close the door and walk away just to calm myself down so I don't do anything I regret. It's really scaring me. And what's worse is my parents aren't supporting me.

My mom just gives me disapproving looks and tells me to do it her way. She says that I should try and talk to him and help him understand, but it hasn't worked. When he first started throwing tantrums I tried talking to him. Didn't work. Then I tried leaving him to scream for 5 mins then going and talking to him. Didn't work. He'd think I was coming to give him what he wanted and when I said no again the tantrum would start all over again. So now I'm trying to just let him scream until he stops and then when he finishes go and talk to him about whatever was wrong and, if he were naughty, why he had ended up on the stairs. The stairs is a new thing as well, I'm adopting the Supernanny 'naughty step' thing so if he is naughty he sits on the stairs for 5 mins. If he starts screaming then he has to stop before he can come off.

The first tantrum where I let him scream lasted an hour. He screamed for an hour before stopping. One last week lasted 20 mins. One on Monday lasted 10. So I think it's working. But on Monday my mom told me she thought I was doing the wrong thing and she ended up leaving the room because me ignoring him was upsetting her. my brother (15) yells at me to 'fix' him. That really upsets me. All up I feel like I have no support and I can't implement my own parenting style when my parents and brother are always telling me what to do, and then go behind my back and try and soothe my son, which just undoes everything.

I can't afford to move out of home. I don't want my parents telling my how to raise my son, and then going behind my back when they don't agree with my ways. I don't want to struggle and stress out with every tantrum. Can someone please help me?

Abortion: As Mitt Romney Moves To The Middle, Anti-Abortion ...

(RNS) As Mitt Romney has moved to the center in an effort to overtake President Barack Obama in the campaign's homestretch, he has by necessity muted -- or even muddied -- his previous opposition to abortion rights, a shift that has left some abortion foes aghast.

But veteran anti-abortion leaders say they are confident that Romney remains committed to their agenda and, in the final weeks before the Nov. 6 vote, they are busy trying to keep rank-and-file activists from pouncing on the Republican candidate's ambiguous statements. Their fear? That going after Romney could prompt defections and cost the GOP a surprisingly strong shot at winning the White House.

"If it's hurting him to bring up the abortion issue, then I'm OK if he doesn't," said Bradley Mattis, head of the Life Issues Institute in Cincinnati.

"I think our movement has to be savvy enough to understand how political campaigns are run," he said. "And if they don't, now would be a good time to have that revelation."

Several other anti-abortion leaders echoed Mattis, saying that abortion opponents around the country have been coordinating their strategy to reflect a political realism that is not often associated with the prophetic tenor of anti-abortion activists. Romney, they say, is the best they will get, and he's not really so bad, especially given the alternative.

"We don't necessarily need in public office someone who is going to be a crusader on this issue. We just need someone who's going to make it easier for us to do our job," said the Rev. Frank Pavone, head of Priests for Life.

"We understand why a candidate wouldn't make this their leading issue," Pavone said, adding that he was comfortable with Romney's positions. "I've found that the more I really try to sincerely understand how politics and government work, the more I'm OK with what might be seen as reason for criticism or concern. It's just the nature of the way it works."

Marjorie Dannenfelser, head of the Susan B. Anthony List, said she gets "outrageous" emails every day saying "it is your obligation to expose Romney's weaknesses."

But she rejects those demands as "off-the-charts unwise," telling her followers that they need a healthy dose of political pragmatism. Romney isn't perfect, she said, but Obama is far worse, and abortion opponents "have the power to make Romney follow through on his commitments" -- if he is elected.

"Politics isn't a science; it is not the art of the perfect," she said. "It's a tool."

If anti-abortion groups can in fact preach that message of political realism, it could prove crucial for Romney, who has long struggled to present a clear position on abortion and reproductive rights.

As governor of Massachusetts a decade ago, Romney strongly supported abortion rights and said he was "effectively pro-choice." The health care plan he shepherded into law, which was a model for Obama's 2010 national reform, even included taxpayer funding for abortions.

In 2005, as Romney began his quest for the Republican presidential nomination, he announced that he had changed his views and was now "pro-life."

But many abortion opponents were never fully convinced of Romney's conversion, and they blasted Romney throughout the GOP primaries as being insincere. He responded by pledging to work to overturn Roe v. Wade, defund Planned Parenthood, and to take other steps demanded by anti-abortion groups.

Since winning the nomination and moving to the general election, however, those statements appeared to hurt him with key voting blocs -- women, in particular, but also independents and young adults.

So several weeks ago, facing an uphill slog in the polls, Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, a Catholic, began to de-emphasize issues like abortion and gay rights in order to win over some of those voters. When they did discuss abortion, it was in terms that seemed to soften or even contradict Romney's earlier positions.

In late August, for example, Romney dismayed some hard-line abortion foes by sharply denouncing Missouri GOP senate candidate Todd Akin for his controversial remarks about rape and abortion. Romney followed that by distancing himself from the Republican platform that bars abortion in all cases, adding that he viewed the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe decision legalizing abortion as "settled."

Then on Oct. 9, Romney told The Des Moines Register that he would not push any abortion-related legislation if elected -- which seemed to contradict a column he wrote in National Review last year detailing the anti-abortion legislation he would support.

And this week, the Romney campaign released a new ad aimed at women voters that stresses Romney's support for contraception and provisions that would allow women to have legal abortions.

Romney followed that up in Tuesday (Oct. 16) night's debate with President Obama by declaring that "Every woman in America should have access to contraceptives." He also said employers should not be able to bar women from receiving such insurance, an apparent reversal of his previous position on that hot-button topic.

While Romney's campaign has often issued follow-up clarifications to reassure social conservatives of Romney's underlying commitments, the initial impression of a more moderate Romney endured -- and many abortion opponents who are passionate about their issue took offense.

"I'm running out of fingers and toes to count the number of positions he has taken on abortion," Steve Deace, a conservative radio host in Iowa, told The Washington Post. "This is someone who does not have a deep or abiding position on this issue either way, and I think what it does is it puts pro-life leadership in America in a difficult position. I don't know anybody in the pro-family movement who is not for sale who trusts him."

On Wednesday, Anna Williams at the conservative journal First Things said she was nonplused by Romney's comments on contraception. "I remain nervous, for there appears to be more than one Mitt Romney," Williams wrote.

Others argue that Romney has simply misstated his views or been quoted out of context. "No alarm bells here," Tony Perkins, president of the anti-abortion Family Research Council, told Talking Points Memo last week after Romney's Iowa remarks.

Romney's faith-based supporters also say that their political pragmatism should be informed by a sense of charity as well.

"It's not just saying,'Suck it up and move on -- vote for him,'" said Dannenfelser. "Mitt Romney is a human being, and it's important to be an asset and a friend to him, to say the best possible things about him."

"I know Romney's weaknesses. He knows his weaknesses. Our role is to provide good counsel to this guy."

The Hypocrisy of Sanitarium. : Avalon's Guide: Emigrate to New ...

Legally, Sanitarium are claiming that Importing Weetabix or Marmite into New Zealand infringes their Trademarks. Now clearly, you should not be able to manufacture a fake product, slap a label on it saying it?s weet-bix or marmite, and pass it off as a Sanitarium Product. That is the whole point of Intellectual property law and the use of Trademarks.

And I Agree with that (but then I?m a greedy capitalist pig who believes in property rights!). If this what was Rob Savage was doing ? I would not support him in that. But that isn?t what he is doing.

The question for me though is: can you claim a product infringes your trademark, if the product was never attempting to pass itself off as yours but is and always has been an entirely different product, and in the case of Weetabix ? has an entirely different name, and has it?s own legitimate Trademark in the country of origin. Its not called Weetabix because its trying to convince Kiwis to buy it instead of Weet-Bix. Its called Weetabix because that?s what the Weetabix company called it. And Marmite is called Marmite because that?s what the Marmite Company always called it.

I personally feel that to claim other wise in order to try and win and force your (religious) beliefs and products on people who would never buy them anyway is ludicrous and makes Sanitarium look like a bunch of whining nincompoops.

But here?s the really kicker ? and something that Sanitarium should hauled over the bloody coals for:

Marmite is a Trademark held by Unilever in the UK, It as also a Trademark held in New Zealand, registered to the Australasian health Conference ? a fancy name which I?m sure is not in any way meant to hide the fact that it?s actually the Seventh Day Adventist Church (as well as eating no meat ? they seem to have a bizarre taste in silly names)

So it is equally illegal for Sanitarium?s marmite product to be imported for sale by Kiwi Importers into the UK. It is equally breaching a trademark, and equally endangering a product that a company has worked hard to promote. (With, may I say a damn site more pizzazz than Sanitarium can manage ? I blame it on the lack of Bacon in their diets!)

In the same vein, Weetabix is a trademark owned in the UK by Weetabix Uk Ltd, and is NOT a trademark owned by The Seventh Day Adventists in New Zealand (or any other silly name). Weet-Bix IS a trademark owned by AUSTRALASIAN CONFERENCE ASSOCIATION LIMITED ? Ie the seventh day Adventists. To be clear ? Sanitarium ? in any form do NOT own the Trademark for Weetabix. Never have. So I think they should shut the **** up since they couldn?t be bothered to pay for the Trademark they are insisting that NZ Customs protect for them.

OK ? so why do I call them out on being hypocrites?

Well, if you jump up and down and throw a tantrum and demand that people respect your Intellectual Property, and threaten legal action to people who do not ? you had better damn well respect other people?s intellectual property. So you don?t for example have a webpage that says this:

How do I get hold of NZ Marmite when I?m overseas?
It?s tough, we know. Trying to get any kiwi foods that you love when you live overseas is very difficult, unless you?ve got loaded friends and family who can send you stuff. But we did think this website was pretty cool www.shopnewzealand.co.nz.

Now why would you do that? Surely as a bunch of holier than though stuck up bullies ? what you should be telling your customers is that unfortunately, Unilever owns the Trademark to Marmite in the UK for example, and that it would infringe their trademark if anyone was to import jars for sale into such counties. They should have an arrangement to ship their products to the UK with different names on them ? perhaps ShiteMite and Tastes-Like-Shite-a-Bix, since they are so fond of telling us ad-nauseum that we are allowed to buy real Marmite as long as its labeled as Our-Mate, and we are happy to pay a Gazillion Dollars for a cubic inch of yeast extract.

But no ? they don?t do that do they?

They want Kiwis traveling abroad to keep buying their own product, with their own precious Infringing trademarks on them. They even shipped a load of jars to the Kiwi Olympic team ? while of course Kiwis cant get any themselves because they still haven?t finished rebuilding the factory. They don?t want Kiwi?s to have to go without. They don?t want ex-pat Kiwis to get homesick, and they sure as hell don?t want Kiwis buying a rival product. They frankly don?t give a stuff about infringing other people?s trademarks if it means their customers get to buy their products.

How DARE they do this while demanding ? in the high court ? that British People should not have the same freedoms they insist that Kiwi?s should be entitled to? That British people should do as Sanitarium tell them, eat what they are told to eat, and buy brands they are told to buy, but Kiwis should continue abroad to support an ?Iconic Kiwi Company?? and ?Iconic Kiwi Brand?. How Bloody Dare They.

This is not an uncommon trait in New Zealand I am afraid. Everything Kiwi is Sacred. Everything Not-Kiwi should be denigrated and stomped on immediately, espeiclaly in this particular case if you can also get to stomp on our Queen!

One of the things I truly despise in this life is Religious Hypocrisy and sanctimonious holier-than-thou righteous douchbags with an overinflated sense of their own importance.

?Free The English Marmite Facebook Page.

?

I Sincerely Hope that Pierre Van Heerden (who is actually from South Africa) has not a single South African Foodstuff in his cupboards.

  1. So ? why did Sanitarium slap an Import Ban on UK Marmite?

ThromboGenics says main drug cleared for U.S. launch

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - ThromboGenics said on Thursday that U.S. health regulators had approved the use of its main drug, eye treatment Jetrea, clearing the way for the Belgian biotech company to start making profits.

The company said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had cleared use of the drug, also known as ocriplasmin, for treatment of symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion, an aging-related pulling on the retina that can cause loss or distortion of vision.

Jetrea is the first drug for this disorder.

ThromboGenics plans to launch Jetrea in the United States in January 2013.

In March, ThromboGenics sold the rights to the drug outside the United States to Novartis AG's ophthalmic division, leading to potential milestone payments of 375 million euros ($492.0 million).

ThromboGenics' shares have risen 96 percent in the year to date and by 61 percent in the last three months alone, helped by an FDA panel's recommendation in July that Jetrea be approved.

They closed on Wednesday at 37 euros, compared with the 4.80 euro per share price they first traded in July 2006.

Belgian biotechs have surged over recent months.

The company last made a profit in 2008, following an upfront payment by Roche for an antibody to fight cancer.

ThromboGenics is investigating ocriplasmin for use in other eye-related indications and has a further drug candidate at a pre-clinical stage of tests in ophthalmology and oncology.
